Here is a quick summary of the competitions for Steve. He participated on Steve Brown’s team on Saturday in the team format for black belt fighting. They ultimately took 2nd place as a team. However, that must have been the warm up that Steve needed. He came out on Sunday for men’s individual fighting and took 1st place in the light heavyweight division. Then after all weight classes were decided the winners of each category faced off to determine the single, grand champion. Steve had 2 tough fights but came out victorious and earned the title of Mens Grand Champion for 2010. Congrats!!!! Way to go Steve.

My brother is an excellent role model for our students who want to become the best they can be in the martial arts. His years of dedication to training karate and his loyalty to our style, Chun Kuk Do are what enabled him to beat out the younger black belts. It’s a small group of people who have walked the walk of being a martial artist their entire lives. Steve is one of them.

I’ll keep everyone posted for when I can get him to come to CT to put on another kids sparring seminar. Last one was way too long ago so I think we are due for a visit this fall/winter. I just now have to work around his seminar schedule which has gotten busier from this win. I think he told me he is headed to TX and GA this fall. I guess it comes w/ the territory when you are grand champ.

Where do we train? Giroux Martial Arts is located at 160 Oak St, Unit 210, Glastonbury, CT 06033. Come on down to watch a class, try a free private lesson, and then join the fun. See you on the mats. Call me with any questions. 860.633.1466 – Jeff Giroux

2010 t-shirts are here! So it’s officially time for summer uniforms – tshirts + belt + pants/shorts. Also pls remember to pack the kids a water bottle for class. I keep the AC at 75 but since they are outside running around before and after class I like to stop for water breaks.

Also, since summer is fast approaching I thought I’d post my “summer options” for classes. I offer different ways to keep kids active while breaking from routines in July/August. For my serious karate kids it is important to stay active. Just like academics…they need to keep their hands in it to continue improving. A long break causes the kids to regress/forget all the stuff they worked so hard to learn. So here are some things to consider.

- Stay active but don’t sweat missing class. Attendance is never 100% during July & August. Swapping your class night and/or doubling up classes in 1 week are no problem to fit summer fun. The best option is to continue to attend group classes when you can even if you miss some.

- Take a monthly private lesson in lieu of your weekly group classes. Just email me and we will coordinate a good time. During the summer I can offer private classes in the mornings or afternoons. I focus exclusively on kata and solo karate techniques that the kids need to retain for their tests. No price change…your monthly membership covers the private lesson.

- Attend my summer karate camp on Friday 7/16 from 9am to 12 noon in lieu of your July or August group classes. This camp is subject to attendance… 10 kids min. and 20 kids max. Kata (empty hand and weapons) + group martial arts games + tye dyed tshirts + board breaking.

Any of the above summer plans will help keep your child progressing while changing things up. And… staying active holds your spot in class which inevitably fill up in the fall. Have a great, safe summer. Coach Jeff

Jerry is an outstanding XMA competitor. He is the team captain and coach of Steve’s school that won grand championship for team competition at 2009 Chun Kuk Do International tournament. Tonight he lead a fun warm up, rills to build veritcal jumps, spins (180, 360, and 540’s), the kung fu butterfly kick, the K kick, landing in a kneeling pose, and how to use chop/punch combos in 45 degree angles to make the performance look outstanidng. Oh yeah…he demonstrated his latest custom kata as well as chucks. To be posted her soon. Check back!

Thanks for the visit Jerry. Always a pleasure having you in Glastonbury. – Jeff

Thanks to all families and students who made this year’s fundraiser a great success. We raised a total of $ 5709 combined between our Glastonbury school and my brother’s school in Newton, MA. All proceeds were donated to Make A Wish Foundation. Great job!!

The night kicked off with the youngest kickers ages 5-6 years old. Each student kicked a foam target held by volunteer moms and dads who kept count of the total good kicks. The kids had (3) 1 minute rounds and the winner was the one who had the highest number.

Next up was an awesome 1 hour seminar/demonstration of XMA or extreme martial arts by Jerry Dwyer Jr. Jerry is a 3rd black belt under my brother and an avid competitor in XMA. He coaches the team in MA who won the grand championships last year at our annual CKD convention. XMA is performance martial arts which combines karate, gymnastics, music, weapons demos, and lots of energy. The kids loved it.

The night capped off with our last two divisions – ages 7-9 & advanced belts. These two groups followed the same format as the younger kids but had increased rounds. The older kids kicked for (2) 3 minute rounds and the advanced belts kicked for (3) 4 minute rounds. What a great event…and I think they all slept well that night after all the hard work.

All kids won gold medals for participating and supporting our fundraiser. Trophies were awarded to the top kickers in each group as well as most funds raised.

Ages 5-6 yrs – Aidan A.

Ages 7-9 – Sean D.

Advanced belts (green, red, jr black) – Cameron M.

Most funds raised – Gavin S., Anthony G.
