How are we DIFFERENT?
1. You will learn
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from a structured curriculum. You won't just show up
to classes and learn whatever the coach feels like doing. Glastonbury
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at GBMA focuses on fundamentals and grows from there.
You will learn takedowns, top game positional controls, guard passing, fighting
from open guard styles, and submissions. See below for more details on the
GBMA curriculum.
2.
Private lessons at group rates! Memberships for adult students include
weekly group classes, open mat times, and (1) monthly PRIVATE LESSON. Your
private lessons will allow us to build a game for you, your skills, and body
type.
3.
This is not an academy where you will feel
intimidated. The goal is to provide a freindly & helpful mat culture to
maximize our training. We are NOT an MMA gym. We are NOT a meat
market school where you are just a number. We are NOT a dojo that requires
signing a contract that binds you to payments even if you can not continue to
train.
Our adult program is for men and women of all ages. No experience is
needed although members from other arts are welcomed. The only
requirements are an open mind & and a commitment to doing your personal best.
Students are expected to attend training regularly in order to advance.
Get in great shape and learn
self-defense skills that could save your life! A typical workout involves
warm-up, positional drills, and focus on one area/aspect of BJJ.
ALL students spar/train with a
resisting partner. Resistance starts low and increases as the student
progresses. Free sparring (w/ competitive rules) is optional and reserved
for students who have completed the "Basic 24" positional controls, escapes, &
submissions. Safety is priority #1...why slam each other around if you
don't know the techniques. That type of training tends to build bad
habits. Master the basics and then use them live!
As a UFAF school we are
affiliated with the Machado BJJ system under David Meyer, John Will, and Brian
Johnson. Periodically throughout the year we host these and other black
belt instructors to share their knowledge and experience. Don't miss
out! Get on the mat and start having fun.
Q. Are players from other
studios welcome? Yes, as long as you have an open mind and share our goal
of helping each other...come on down. Pay mat fee per session or take a
membership.
Q. Can women benefit from BJJ?
Yes. BJJ is a martial art that relies on timing, leverage, and technique.
Women or men who are smaller than an opponent benefit the most from BJJ as an
"equalizer" form of martial art.
Q. Private lesson or group class?
Private lessons have been the preferred method in Brazil since BJJ's inception.
Check out our private lessons which can be solo or with a small group of
friends. Our private lesson rates are comparable to other academies rates
for group classes !!!

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU
BJJ is a ground-based martial art developed &
advanced by the
Gracie Family. Unlike other
grappling arts like judo or wrestling the objective is not to "pin" your
opponent. The ultimate goal of BJJ is to gain positional advantage and
apply a joint lock or choke to force your opponent into submission.
BJJ endorses the concept that a smaller,
weaker person using leverage and good technique can defend themselves on the
ground against a larger, stronger opponent. It can be trained for self defense,
sport tournaments, and mixed martial arts (MMA - sometimes called NHB or "No
Holds Barred") competition. Repetitive practice of techniques & sparring with
resisting partners constitute the major areas of practice.
The history of the art goes back to the
1930's where it was tested in the crucible of competition from the start. It
wasn't until the early 1990's that the art gained attention in the US with the
advent of televised NHB cage fighting. Through BJJ, practitioners took the
martial arts world by storm shattering long held myths of the invincibility of
certain traditional arts.
PHYSICAL FITNESS & SELF-DEFENSE
Try for yourself and see how
great you feel after getting the best total body workout you've ever
experienced. Other side effects include: weight lose, lower stress, and
improved confidence from knowing you can defend yourself.
